TA'AM YISRAEL: OVERVIEW

Taam students at the recently excavated site in the southwestern corner of the the Temple Plaza in Jerusalem's Old City.

Ta’am Yisrael: A Taste of Israel is a program designed by the CFJE to give a select number of 8th grade students a meaningful, intense, emotional and focused taste of their heritage through a SEVEN-DAY “HANDS-ON” EXPERIENCE IN ISRAEL. A main goal of the program is to integrate substantial Jewish content to enhance this outstanding educational experience. The CFJE is seriously committed to providing high-level Israeli security for the experience.

Ta’am Yisrael was developed in order to respond to the needs of post-Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, who constitute an especially at-risk group for discontinuing their Jewish education. Traditionally, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year has marked the entrance, as an adult, into the Jewish community as an adult. However, following the excitement of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah year, a majority of students do not return for additional Jewish education.

The goals of Ta’am Yisrael include:

  • Provide a strategic Israel experience for Jewish students
  • Encourage Jewish students to continue their Jewish Education post Bar/Bat Mitzvah
  • Aid in building the relationship between individual Jewish students and Israel so that students will return for lengthier Israel experiences and aid in cultivating Jewish identity
  • Build Jewish identity, and thus, help ensure continued and expanded affiliation with the Jewish community, including such examples as Jewish camping and youth programming
  • Provide respected staff leadership in order to seek to engage the teens on a new level of learning and living Jewish history and Jewish life in Israel

Our well-designed format includes parent and student orientations, preparatory student programming, extensive development and training for accompanying staff. The itinerary is highly active and includes hiking, camping, outdoor group excursions and a variety of additional adventures. Highlights include:

  • Shabbat in Jerusalem
  • The Kotel and Jerusalem’s Old City
  • Climbing Masada
  • Swimming in the Dead Sea
  • Beit Guvrin/Archeological Dig
  • Activities with Israeli youth
  • Bedouin Tent experience
  • Jeep Rides in the Negev
